Blizzard’s Unannounced Survival Game to Include Elements of Diablo 4 and World of Warcraft
Blizzard’s upcoming survival game is expected to contain elements of both Diablo 4 and World of Warcraft, according to newly unearthed evidence. The company initially confirmed that the upcoming survival game would be developed for PC and consoles in early 2022, but has since revealed few details about the title.
The last official update on the project came as part of the studio’s year-in-review update in December, where it was revealed that Blizzard’s mysterious survival game was being led by Far Cry director Dan Hay. The company also stated that the game’s development team had doubled over the course of 2022, with this growth expected to continue until 2023.
Following this forecast, Blizzard has released over a dozen new job listings related to its mysterious project since the end of March. Many of these postings offer additional insights into the upcoming survival game, including direct confirmation that the title will take place in a “fantasy world,” which was already hinted at in the announcement artwork.
Several other listings suggest that Blizzard’s survival game universe will be similar to the open-world version, filled to the brim with side activities. Another job posting mentions boss battles, which is notable since bosses are not necessarily a staple of the survival genre.
The newly surfaced job listings also align with an earlier report indicating that Blizzard’s survival game will have co-op, not least because they directly state that multiplayer content will be part of the package. None of the ads refer directly to co-op, but some mention PvP and PvE missions as well as “dungeons” and “raid-like points of interest.”
Several other job descriptions highlight artificial intelligence as a major development focus, explaining that Blizzard’s mysterious game is attempting to pursue “modular AI as a service.” This mention of modularity implies behavior loops that can supplement one another as needed but still work independently, allowing Blizzard to iterate on its enemy design fairly quickly.
Several other role descriptions include direct references to live service elements, fitting with the developer’s long track record of post-launch monetization. One of the April posts for a senior AI designer also suggests that the survival game will spawn enemies in a mob-like way.
While a report from late 2022 suggested that Blizzard’s unannounced survival game would include FPS missions, this recent wave of job listings indicates that the game will be played entirely from a first-person perspective. All of these new insights seem to help explain Blizzard’s decision to hire a Far Cry veteran as one of the leads of the project, not least because an open-world FPS with RPG-like content sounds like something that overlaps fairly closely with Ubisoft’s hit shooter series.
